  1. BEYOND THE BLACK RIVER - A computer painting, it appears on the book dust jacket of "BEYOND THE BLACK RIVER" by Robert E. Howard. Volume 7 in the 10 volume series, "The Weird Works of Robert E. Howard". Published by Wildside Press

I have a folder in my computer that is filled with unfinished paintings that I play around with from time to time. Once in a while they come in handy. To make this book dust jacket picture I went into that folder and selected the background scene you see here and all I had to do was paint in the river and pirates at the bottom.

Our imagination is our greatest asset, everything about the way we live today came out of the imagination of those who came before us. And one of their truly great imaginings led to the creation of a special group of 44 squiggly marks; 26 of them are called "letters of the alphabet," 10 others are called "numbers," and 8 are called "punctuation" marks . . .

And by arranging those 44 squiggly marks in special ways on paper for you to "read," it is possible for writers to put into your mind, word-images and knowledge about everything they know of this world and this universe, and whatever else comes from their imaginations . . .

Open a book, read the squiggles and in your mind's eye "see" The Battle of Gettysburg . . .

Open a book, read the squiggles and in your mind's eye "see" The Crucifixion of Christ . . .

All of man's knowledge is available to you . . . just open a book, it's all in the squiggles . . .

Think of the wonder of it, of what Squiggly marks on the pages of books have done, and continue to do for mankind. - WHO was the first human to imagine such an incredible concept? - I have no idea . . .
